One-of-a-kind cat found in dumpster is as rare as a unicorn

Martyr is not your typical cat.

First, he was found in 2016 in a dumpster after a passerby heard his soft meows coming from inside.

Visibly abandoned there, the kitten suffered from a broken front leg in addition to gangrene of a hind leg.

Luckily, her new owner knew exactly how to help her. Over time, he has been cared for and still wears his cone proudly.

Martyr unfortunately lost her hind leg due to the gangrene she was suffering from. However, his owner had experience fostering kittens and still helped him heal safely to where he is today.

Outside of his humble dumpster beginnings, Martyr was only recently discovered to be a male cat!

While most calico cats are female, Martyr is a very rare exception. In fact, until recently, we called her “her”.

Apparently, only 1 in 3,000 calico cats are male!

This is due to the presence of the X chromosome in cats, which contributes to the display of orange and black fur in cats.

In females, due to the double X chromosomes they have, this gives them the appearance of what we would consider a calico cat – a basic white coat topped with orange and black fur.

For a male cat to have the appearance of a calico, he must therefore carry two X chromosomes in addition to a Y chromosome.

This makes cats like Martyr a miracle of nature.

This, combined with his humble beginnings, makes this cat as rare as a fictional unicorn. The adorable face of Martyr caused a sensation on the Imgur site when the niece of his new mistress posted all the photos presented in this article!

What do you think of the story of Martyr? Would you like to have a cat like him?
