Cave explorers find dog trapped in 30m pit and descend to save his life

Sometimes dogs get stuck in some pretty tough places and need a little human help to break free.

This is the case of a dog who, at the beginning of the month, fell into a cave 10 meters. Fortunately, a group of bystanders found him in time and saved his life.

On September 4, a group of cave explorers were at the Dewey Hickman Nature Preserve in Indiana when they saw an unexpected sight: a dog was stuck deep in a cave, 10 meters from depth.

The dog was also very thin, and appeared to have been there for about two weeks. He had probably survived on rainwater collected in an empty turtle shell at the bottom of the cave.

When the explorers saw the dog, they abseiled to retrieve it.

The cavers named their new friend Dewey, and the dog was very grateful for their help.

“When Hawkeye came out of the cave, he was very emaciated,” said April Breeden of Harrison County Animal Control. “Once they were in the cave with him and once he came out of it as well, he was very sweet.”

“Originally they went down pushing back to check and came back up. He started barking, ‘Don’t leave me.’”

After being rescued, the emaciated dog was taken to Harrison County Animal Control.

On September 6, Animal Control announced that they had located the dog’s owner. “His name is actually Hawkeye,” they wrote. They also thanked everyone who shared the story: Hawkeye’s family reportedly contacted them after seeing their dog on the news.

On Sept. 7, Hawkeye was finally reunited with his family, a happy ending to his frightening ordeal: “When he saw his dad, he was so excited, he was jumping up and hugging him,” Breeden told The Dodo.

We are so happy Hawkeye has returned home. It’s a miracle those cave explorers found him, and we’re so happy they rescued him and helped find his family.
