Woman befriends neighbor’s donkey and they end up saving each other

After Shelbi Hahn and her husband moved to Virginia, one of the first neighbors she met was Jenny. This nice donkey belonged to the neighbor of Shelbi Hahn, and as soon as they met, an inexplicable bond was created between them.

“When I first met Jenny, I brought her some carrots and sat on a bench they had, and she approached me without hesitation,” Ms Hahn says.

Shortly after first meeting Jenny, Shelbi Hahn unexpectedly lost her brother. She couldn’t go home and be with her family because of COVID, and it was incredibly difficult to deal with. For entertainment, she often helped her neighbors by watching their animals when they weren’t around, and it was there that she began to bond with Jenny.

“It was like I could sit there and she would lay her head on me and listen to everything,” Hahn says. “She was absorbing almost all of my pain, crazy as that sounds. Every time I came to visit her, she let out a loud bray (the loud cry she lets out) and it filled my heart with such joy. The owners told me all the time how much she loved me and how comfortable she was with me.

The bond between Hahn and Jenny grew stronger every day. They became best friends, and everyone could see how much they loved each other.

A year after Jenny Hahn lost her brother, tragedy struck again when she suffered a miscarriage. Shortly after, Jenny lost her pasture buddy and one of her owners. The two best friends suffered a lot and mourned together. They found solace in each other and their friendship, and it was then that Jenny’s remaining owner made a decision.

“Donkeys don’t usually do well on their own, and her owner is older and wasn’t going to be able to look after her and find her another companion, so she asked me if I could take her, because we bonded so much and we have a little farm with goats and chickens,” Hahn said.

Hahn and her husband immediately agreed, and Jenny officially became part of their family.

“She adapts well and is very interested in other animals,” Hahn said. “She hugs me every day when I kneel down to talk to her, and she keeps braying when she sees me. It’s a bond I cherish and I’m so grateful that we found each other during those really difficult years.”
