It’s a question that many couples have already thought about: how will our new baby get along with our dog? This is a concern that unfortunately leads to some dogs being abandoned, but it’s reasonable to want your fur baby and your current baby to get along well and be safe.
But most pets get along well with babies, and may even become their first best friend. Even the biggest and toughest dogs can be incredibly sensitive and affectionate towards children.
Like this dog who gave a very sweet gift to his new human.
Bonnie Michalek, from California, and her husband love their Brutus like family – Bonnie said they even call the dog their “first baby”.
But when Bonnie became pregnant with her real first baby, Brutus knew it before anyone else: Bonnie remembers the dog suddenly becoming more protective of her in the early days of her pregnancy.
“Brutus knew I was pregnant before I did – he definitely felt it before I knew it,” she said.
“He always loved kids,” Bonnie said. “Every time he has heard children laughing outside, he is excited”.
When she brought baby Kayden home to meet Brutus for the first time, the dog lovingly approached and licked the newborn’s face.
Since then, Brutus and Kayden have been great pals, and the dog is willing to do anything for the baby…including sharing his favorite possession.
Like many dogs, Brutus has a particular favorite toy he clings to: a yellow plush ball. “It’s the only toy he doesn’t tear apart in five minutes,” Bonnie says.
But he’s willing to part with it if it can help his favorite little human feel better.
“Every time Kayden cries, Brutus finds her stuffed ball and tries to bring it to her,” Bonnie wrote on Instagram. “So cute.”
That’s real love.
It’s clear that this dog is going to be watching over his new best friend for a long time.
