No matter who you are, adopting a dog is always a great decision. When you adopt a dog from a shelter, not only are you giving it a wonderful new life, but you’re also receiving lots of unconditional love in return.
Even major Hollywood celebrities have shared how their shelter dogs have changed their lives. Recently, a star shared how adopting his best furry friend was the “best decision” he ever made.
Chris Evans is best known for playing superhero Captain America in a series of hit Marvel blockbusters. But he’s become a real-life superhero for a mixed boxer named Dodger, whom Evans adopted in 2017.
It all started while Evans was filming the movie Gifted, and he realized the kennel they were filming in wasn’t just a movie set.
“Are these actors’ dogs or are they real dogs to adopt?”, said the actor. “And of course they were, so I was walking down the aisles and I saw this guy and he had no business being there. I hooked him up and he’s such a good dog”.
“I had no intention of saving a dog that day, but the minute I saw him I knew he was coming home with me,” Chris Evans wrote in a post. Instagram marking National Rescue Dog Day.
In a recent interview, Evans said he imagined adopting a puppy and never planned on bringing home an older dog like Dodger. But after seeing Dodger, it was love at first sight.
“Dodger was an adult dog,” he told BuzzFeed, noting that the dog was about 2 years old at the time. “It wasn’t the story I had in mind but it ended up being the best decision of my life.”
The actor now says more people should consider adopting senior dogs, who need homes but are often neglected.
“I just think a lot of adult dogs and senior dogs are neglected, and that’s a shame,” he said. “Let’s give them love, too”.
While it wasn’t clear that Evans loves dogs, he also got to play with puppies throughout the interview – and couldn’t contain his excitement:
Evans hadn’t planned on adopting a dog that day on set, but it clearly changed her life. Dodger is adored by the actor’s fans, and appears frequently on his social media.
Dodger became such a big part of Evans’ life, in fact, that he got the dog’s name tattooed on his chest.
“I mean it’s probably one of the purest relationships I’ve had,” Evans said in an interview! in October 2020. “Getting your name tattooed didn’t take a lot of conviction. I will never regret this tattoo. I have regretted a few in my life, but not this one.”
“He acts like a puppy, he has puppy energy, he’s just such a heart, he’s such a good boy,” Evans said. “He loves dogs, he loves children, he is full of love”.
“God, dogs are such awesome animals. I really can’t say enough about dogs, I’m a dog nut.” A dog’s love can be the most precious thing in the world, even for the rich and famous.
