El Rey Magnum is a young Arabian stallion selectively bred to have an extraordinary face with widely flared nostrils and wide eyes, giving him a cartoonish appearance.
The first photos and videos of an Arabian stallion named El Rey Magnum, released late last year by Orrion Farms in Washington DC, had quite a polarizing effect.
While many horse lovers immediately called El Rey Magnum the most beautiful horse in the world (which the stallion named Frederick the Great would hardly agree with), some experts said they were horrified by these external features of the animal and warned that they could negatively affect its health.
The concave profile and large, prominent nostrils are the distinguishing characteristics of the Purebred Arabian. They help horses breathe in their native desert environment, increasing airflow to the lungs and providing legendary stamina for these mounts.
However, in the case of El Rey Magnum, these natural characteristics have been taken to extremes through selective breeding to give him a unique, almost cartoonish appearance.
Doug Leadley, head breeder at Orrion Farms, described El Rey Magnum as “the next step on the road to greatness”, responding to critics: “I think most of the dissatisfied people are people who don’t breed of horses, have nothing to do with them and do not understand this problem. »
