The life of Joe Dassin’s sons: they no longer remembered their father and found themselves without a mother very early

On August 20, 1980, Joe Dassin died – a French singer who was loved and continues to be loved for his velvety, soulful voice and his heartfelt songs.

He lived to be less than 42 and moved on, leaving two young sons. We will tell you how their life went.

Listening to Joe Dassin, women around the world could not hold back their tears as his songs were touching. Even without understanding a word of French, the public felt: he sings of love, separation, desire and sadness for his beloved. And they believed it unconditionally: only he who experienced it himself can sing so soulfully about love! But he didn’t write the lyrics to the songs himself. But that didn’t stop Joe Dassin from living love stories with his heroes. He himself was the same – an incorrigible romantic who spent his whole life searching for true love. It seemed that he had everything for happiness: women adored him, he himself was open to relationships. It was only now that happiness fell on him in small episodes: fate saved.

He was 25 when he met Greek actress Maryse Massiera. They starred together in the movie It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Love literally broke out at first sight, they met for two years, then got married. By the way, the initiator of this approach was Maryse. Joe Dassin did not really want to legitimize the relationship, but the beloved insisted. She was only able to break the resistance by resorting to an ultimatum: either they enter into a legal marriage, or she leaves. He expected nothing good from marriage, but, unexpectedly for himself, began to enjoy it. Maryse was a caring wife, always supported him in his creative pursuits.

Soon the artist, to his great surprise, realizes: Maryse is not only a wife, she is for him both a secretary, and a manager, and a nutritionist, and a dresser, and even a driver. Everything went well, and it got even better when, after 7 years of marriage, the long-awaited pregnancy arrived: both dreamed of a baby. Son Joshua was born premature and weak. The boy only lived 5 days. For Joe Dassin and Maryse, the loss of a child was a great sorrow, and each of them experienced it alone. Until recently, the singer, madly in love with his wife, moved away from her, withdrew, preferring to face depression alone. Nothing pleased him, moreover, the milestone of forty years was approaching and, apparently, this same “midlife crisis” had arrived. In this state, a spark was enough to awaken in him a new interest in life. Such a spark was the knowledge of Christine.

Dassin’s friends called Christine Delvaux a “frivolous blonde with no particular occupation”. For those around it was clear: a thirty year old wants to bask in the glory of the famous singer, she needs strong sensations. Only Dassin himself did not understand this. He lost his mind. Several years later, Christine wrote a book of memoirs about Joe Dassin, where she called him “a poet, a romantic, an inventor”, and their love story – “a fairy tale”. They married in January 1978, and their eldest son Jonathan was born in the fall. Julien was born a year and a half later. It seemed that the spouses now had everything for happiness. But they were very different … Christine, it turned out that she liked fun parties with alcohol and drugs, she took her husband there. Dassin suffered from his irrepressible jealousy, violent clashes, family scandals.

By the time her second son was born, her patience had run out. 3 weeks after the birth of Julien, the singer filed for divorce. The experience of his second marriage greatly adversely affected his health: the singer’s heart ached more and more, a stomach ulcer developed. And on July 20, 1980, he was gone. This tender and sincere man, who believed so much in the power of love, did not have the opportunity to fully enjoy the long-awaited happiness of fatherhood. When he died, his eldest son was not even two years old, and the youngest was barely 5 months old.

The singer’s mother immediately took the boys to her home. She took her grandchildren to America, believing that her mother, leading a scandalous life, would not be able to raise them properly. Christine has long fought for the right to raise her children. For this, she completely changed her life, managed to get rid of bad habits, and the court finally returned the children to their mother. Christine also died early – at 45, when the boys were teenagers. As adults, Jonathan and Julien did everything to perpetuate their father’s legacy. And they themselves, toOf course, linked their lives with music. Jonathan was already in the middle school band when he was 13 years old. When his mother died, Jonathan was 16 years old. Then he dropped out of school – trying to survive his pain, the guy went to Belgrade to study ethnic music. After 2 years, Jonathan moved to Tahiti and lived there for about a year. Then he returned to Europe. He fell in love, got married and always continued to play – he is drawn to a variety of directions, from reggae and folk to rock and African music. He has two children – a son and a daughter.

While Joe Dassin’s eldest son was busy creating his own music and playing it, the younger son used core strengths to preserve his father’s legacy. Julien first wanted to become a film actor, then he thought about going into business, but soon left economic university so that nothing would distract him from his father’s music. He decided to continue his work. He meets and begins to collaborate with the authors with whom Joe Dassin had formerly worked. And in 2010, he presented his first musical to the public. The plot centered on the life of her famous father and, of course, the musical was filled with his songs. Julien’s performance is a success, and the young man, inspired, continues to go in this direction. Julien covered all the songs of Joe Dassin, but not only – he released several albums which became popular.

Of course, he understands: the lion’s share of his success is due to his father: people are curious to know who became the son of their favorite artist. But take it easy. Julien calls himself Joe Dassin’s biggest fan: he watched all his shows, he studied his movements, his gestures, his facial expressions, what he liked, what he wore… He needed all these details to get to know his father better, whom he didn’t remember at all.
