A camera captures the moment a woman finds her dog alive after a tornado. (video)

Residents of Mayfield, Ky., are still reeling from last weekend’s devastating tornado that claimed dozens of lives and upset countless across the region.

But while the scale of the disaster is still unfolding, some stories have started to emerge showing that, despite the tragedy, there is still hope.

Dutch journalist Lucas Waagmeester was on the ground in Mayfield this week assessing the damage when he encountered a woman in the rubble-strewn streets. Her house had been lifted and moved by the tornado, but she was thinking at the time of her dog, Nola, who had disappeared at the time of the tornado.

And though his search may have seemed hopeless, it was not.

In a touching moment captured on film, the woman and Nola were reunited in tears:

There, amid the rubble of so many ordeals, a priceless piece was pieced together.

And hopefully, other tornado victims whose beloved pets have gone missing will experience similar happy scenes.

The Kentucky Humane Society and Mayfield-Graves County Animal Shelter, along with other animal welfare organizations, are currently working to feed and house the displaced animals and reunite them with their owners. Find out how you can help.
