Goran Marinkovic always takes food with him when he walks in Kraljevo, Serbia. Every day he feeds over 100 stray dogs and cats who have no one to look after them, but in March last year he came across a tiny puppy he couldn’t bear to give up . The little dog lives next to a pile of trash, sheltering from the elements with old boots. Marinkovic couldn’t find another dog nearby, as the pup was too young to be left without a mother.
He immediately lay down and showed his belly as he approached the pup. “She was completely exhausted,” Marinkovic said. “She knew I could be her only chance, so she got down on her knees and surrendered to fate.” Marinkovic picked up the little dog and took her to the vet. He wasn’t sure she would manage after being alone for so long, sleeping under the stars. But the puppy, whom he named Coco, wouldn’t let him go.
Coco’s affectionate personality began to emerge as she regained her strength: “She likes people,” says Marinkovic. “She is always optimistic”. Marinkovic’s inbox was flooded with messages offering to collect the pup after she posted pictures of it on Facebook. Marinkovic, meanwhile, wanted to make sure she had the best possible home.
He contacted one of his friends and fellow rescuers who was familiar with international animal adoptions. And once Coco had received all her vaccinations. Coco is nothing like the sick pup Marinkovic discovered hiding behind a shoe a year ago. She has grown into a happy, fluffy dog who loves going on adventures with her family.
