It’s cool that in our time there are still people who are able to do things with future generations in mind. Briton Pat Smith is already 70 years old and despite her age, the woman is still full of energy and she has decided to dedicate 2021 to cleaning up the beaches of her native United Kingdom. During the year, the woman tidied up 52 sites, one for each week.
The woman says that the only reason that pushed her to such an occupation is concern for the future of her children and grandchildren. “We are causing catastrophic damage to the oceans. I have to do something about it,” Pat said.
In 2020 Pat co-founded Last Straw Cornwall, a company dedicated to tackling pollution in the UK city of Cornwall.
The company has been able to attract ordinary entrepreneurs and enthusiasts. As a result, a group of people have formed who work together to solve a problem.
The woman decided to become an example for others. She started traveling around her homeland and cleaning the beaches.
Pat also started a blog where she talked about all the events. After learning of the woman’s desire to deal with the pollution, other people began to join her.
Every year, 85 tonnes of plastic are thrown away in the UK alone. Last Straw Cornwall has become one of many companies tackling this problem. It remains to be hoped that they will succeed.
Imagine that a plastic straw takes about 200 years to decompose. At the same time, a large number of marine animals die each year due to plastic waste.
