Dejana Bako’s journey began with questions about her unique condition as a child, but as she matured, she embraced her body and its capabilities. Despite being born without upper limbs, she has excelled as both an artist and an athlete, recently reaching new heights as a wife and mother.
Dejana was born in Novi Sad on December 9, 1994. An early curiosity about my physical features developed into a steady determination to follow my passions. She joined the Society of Mouth and Foot Artists at the age of nine, which discovered her artistic talents. After completing her studies at the School of Design Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Novi Sad, she exhibited her work in the Balkans.
Known as the “girl with wings”, Dejana has become a symbol of empowerment in Serbia. Despite her physical challenges, she has achieved remarkable success in the sport, becoming World Para Taekwondo Champion in 2019, a groundbreaking achievement for Serbia. In February 2023, Dejana celebrated another milestone by giving birth to her first child.
Her decision to make this new chapter a priority meant missing out on the 2024 Paralympics, but she remains determined to share her message of sustainability through social media.
While art remains her passion, Dejana’s dedication to the sport led her to take up Para Taekwondo in 2016, winning awards in the process. She believes in overcoming obstacles by maintaining a positive self-esteem and focusing on your worth.
Dejana acknowledges the impact of motherhood on her sporting career, but is determined to take on the challenge. She adapts to caring for her daughter using her legs, embracing the joys and responsibilities of motherhood with her husband.
