The two boys that Colin Farrell is the father of come from separate relationships. Early in James’s life, he was diagnosed with an uncommon disease.
On September 12, 2003, Canadian model Kim Bordenave gave birth to their son, Colin Farrell’s first fatherhood. James was born, but Farrell was filming Alexander, so he was not present for the birth. He has frequently stated that being a parent is the finest job he has ever had; therefore, he didn’t disguise his delight.
His friendship with Kim was apparently tense at the time, despite his happiness. Kim was upset at what she saw to be Colin’s lack of attention during such a crucial time, and she had even written on her blog just before the baby was born that she intended to raise the kid independently of Colin.
But it didn’t take long to see that assistance would be required. James was first declared to be healthy at birth, but later on, physicians discovered that he had Angelman syndrome, a rare genetic condition that impairs neurodevelopment. When his son James was four years old in 2007, Colin made public the news of his ailment.
Farrell has remained close to both his son and Kim and has played a significant role in James’s upbringing. He has witnessed every significant turning point in James’s life. In press interviews, the actor has discussed his son’s development and said that he and Kim “celebrate even the smallest victories” together.
Everyone in the home shed tears as James learned to walk at the age of four, according to Farrell. He said his first word at age six, and by the time he was nineteen, he could feed himself and even control his seizures. By the time he finished eating himself, his face resembled a painting by Jackson Pollock. However, he’s coping well; he feeds himself well.

Still, James needs help with a lot of everyday chores, which is why Kim and Colin applied for joint conservatorship just before James turned eighteen. The ex-couple is still taking care of their son together nowadays. Colin started a charity in 2024 to help parents whose children have genetic abnormalities. The goal of the charity is to support the parents of adult children with special needs, who frequently have to face these difficulties on their own.
